At a recent groundbreaking ceremony in Ynysawdre, works began to build two new Extra Care Schemes in Ynysawdre and Maesteg that will provide state of the art units for elderly and vulnerable people living in the Bridgend County Borough.  A joint development, via Bridgend County Borough Council, Welsh Government and Linc-Cymru, hoping to see residents move in 2018 and providing an alternative to three ageing care homes within Maesteg, Ynysawdre and Ogmore Vale areas.

The ceremony held in Ynysawdre was attended by Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies, Council Leader Huw David, BCBC Cabinet Members, BCB Mayor Reg Jenkins, and Chief Executive of Linc-Cymru Housing Association Robert Smith along with other officials and councillor representatives.

Following the event Huw said: “I was pleased to attend the ground-breaking of the fantastic new Extra Care facilities that will benefit many of my constituents.  Seen as the future of support for older people these individual apartments are specifically designed so that tenants can live safely and independently in their own homes – all part of Bridgend County Borough and the Welsh Government’s ongoing plans to modernise residential care services – also with the help of Linc-Cymru in this instance.”

Council Leader Huw David said: “Across the UK, Extra Care has proven itself to be the future for how elderly and vulnerable people are looked after and cared for. I am extremely proud to see Bridgend County Borough Council and Linc-Cymru working together on the development of these new facilities, and I am certain that will offer major benefits for the community.”

Chief Executive of Linc-Cymru, Robert Smith, added: “We know how important these new developments are to the Council and today is a very special day since it represents the realisation of many years of strategic planning and preparation by the Council. We feel privileged to have been chosen to be Bridgend’s partner.”
