Many will remember the huge public response last year – including a packed Town Hall event – to a previous consultation by ABMU Health Board. Strong views were expressed then by one and all in support of our Maesteg Community Hospital, and in opposition to the proposals which were put forward at that time.
Many people said they wanted to see the new (just coming into existence at that time) Health Authority covering the Bridgend area (Cwm Taf Morgannwg University (CTMU) Health Board) take a different approach. We wanted them to start by working with local residents, GPS and clinicians, hospital staff and the Friends of the Hospital, patients and carers and elected representatives to come up with a brighter vision for the future which looked to build on the existing health provision and to look at introducing new services to serve our health needs.
This would help safeguard the future of this wonderful and historic facility, and also reflect the new and changing demands of people’s healthcare locally. It would be a win-win.
Following the announcement below from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board – it is great to see that CTMU Health Board have taken on these concerns, and begun the work of engaging with patients and staff, the Friends and local groups, to start shaping an exciting vision for the future in Maesteg and the surrounding area. Most importantly, they have started from listening to users and clinicians, carers and staff, and will continue to work in collaboration to take these ideas forward.
This is early days, but it bodes well for a more collaborative approach of developing this facility, safeguarding it for years ahead. We will keep on pushing the case for developing our healthcare services at Maesteg so they are fit for now and well into the future.
We look forward to the CTMU Health Board continuing this level of positive and active engagement with the community as they shape their emerging proposals.
Development of Maesteg Hospital…
Maesteg Hospital, within the Llynfi Valley, includes a 20 bedded elderly care ward (Llynfi Ward), an Outpatients Department, a Day Hospital which is currently temporarily closed, and various other departments such as Mental Health, Physiotherapy, Health Visitors, District Nurses, Radiology. There is also a GP surgery on site.
Since the transfer of services to the newly established CTMU HB, and working closely with our local authority partners, we have considered the views of the community and have been reviewing all services and the local needs. In considering the Community Models we have developed within the former Cwm Taf area, we have thought how we might use the concept of a ‘Health and Wellbeing Centre’ for Maesteg Hospital. This would also act as a ‘Local Community Hub’, a focal point for health and wellbeing for local communities.
We see this as an exciting opportunity to develop services within the Llynfi Valley, working closely with our partners to improve the care people receive and how they receive it.
We are working on: • More outpatient clinics • Utilising the Day Unit space for services that can be provided locally • A sociable space to support voluntary organisations • Health and wellbeing functions to enhancing self-management • Avoiding unnecessary travel for local residents • Supporting people to keep themselves healthy and active • Reducing social isolation, which can lead to ill health
We look forward to sharing progress on these plans…
