Sony UK Technology Centre in Top 10 at Ceremony in Parliament
Huw joined in congratulating Sony UK Technology Centre (Sony UKTEC) on being named a National Responsible Business Champion award finalist at a reception in Parliament.
The National Responsible Business Champion scheme, run by the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group (APCRG) is designed to recognize businesses that have taken meaningful steps to give back to their communities.
Sony UKTEC, nominated for the award by Huw Irranca-Davies MP, manufactures high-calibre Sony and non-Sony products, including the only high definition Sony cameras built outside Japan. In the past decade, Sony UKTEC has grown and expanded, while also strengthening its ties to South Wales.
Sony was selected as one of ten award finalists from across the UK, based on its environmental initiatives and its commitment to local causes. In recent years, Sony UKTEC has reduced its carbon footprint to 62% and increased its waste recycling to 98%. They have also worked with local schools to provide learning opportunities for students and teamed up with Ospreys Rugby Club and Cardiff City Football Club to support multi-media “Family Learning Zones”.
Huw, who has spoken in the past about Sony UKTEC’s role in Ogmore, met with Managing Director Steve Dalton OBE to congratulate them on being named an award finalist. Steve and Huw then went on to attend the reception in Speaker’s House hosted by Speaker John Bercow.
Huw said, “For the past decade, Sony UKTEC has not only been a job creator, but also a valuable member of our community. I was honored to nominate them for this important award, and it is great to see my colleagues recognise the unique role they play in Pencoed.”
“It is more important than ever that businesses serve as corporate citizens, responsible to their shareholders, as well as their neighbors. I can only hope that the thousands of businesses that call the UK home will follow Sony UKTEC’s lead and strive to create opportunities for those around them.”
