My Support for a Senedd Pay Freeze

There has been a proposal by the Independent Remuneration Board to increase the salaries of Members of the Senedd from May 2021. I wanted to set out my position for my constituents very clearly indeed.

I and my Welsh Labour and Cooperative colleagues strongly oppose the proposal to increase MS salaries at this time. We have written to the Independent Board, asking them to reconsider and to maintain the current freeze on MS salaries.

We believe it's inappropriate, insensitive and unfair to proceed with a salary increase for MSs at a time when our constituents are facing very difficult circumstances as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We accepted a pay freeze last year for the same reasons. We see absolutely no reason to change that position now.

My focus as a Welsh Labour and Co-operative Member of the Senedd continues to be on supporting my constituents and local businesses through the tough and challenging circumstances they face, which have arisen as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
