Local MSs Huw Irranca-Davies and Sarah Murphy Celebrate 10 year Anniversary of National Support for

This week, Huw Irranca-Davies MS for Ogmore and Sarah Murphy MS for Bridgend are taking part in celebrations taking place across the country for Armed Forces Week [21 to 27 June], this year’s events also mark 10 years since organisations across Wales signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Covenant was established to help ensure past and present members of the Armed Forces community are not disadvantaged when accessing services, and that they receive special consideration, for example, for access to health services if their condition is Service related.

In Wales, this commitment to the Covenant has included:

  • Increasing NHS funding specifically for veterans for physical and mental health services;

  • A Welsh-specific Resettlement Guide for Service leavers and families;

  • Guaranteed interview schemes for ex-Service personnel;

  • Funding support for children of Armed Forces personnel; and

  • Funding for charities to tackle loneliness and social isolation amongst ex-Service personnel.

Huw Irranca-Davies, MS for Ogmore added, “my sincerest thanks to all service men and women who have fought long and hard to protect us, especially during this pandemic. Wales as a country is committed to providing targeted services and support that meet the needs of this important community. Thank you to you all.”

Member of the Senedd for Bridgend, Sarah Murphy said, “Most veterans go on to be leaders in their civilian lives, in their work and communities, and this is absolutely the case across Bridgend, especially during the COVID pandemic. That is why we are celebrating our veterans, and also listening and standing up for them. In Wales we want to make sure that every veteran can move back into civilian life with secure, well paid work; safe affordable housing; exceptional healthcare and mental health support; and lifelong security for them and their families”.

The Welsh Government will continue to work in collaboration with The Armed Forces Expert Group and other key partners to deliver the support our Armed Forces community so require and so richly deserve.
