Huw named Cycle Champion
Huw Irranca-Davies, MP for Ogmore, has been named as a Cycle Champion by Sustrans Cymru, the organisation which promotes cycling in Wales, for his consistent work championing walking and cycling in Ogmore and in London.
Huw is a regular cyclist and walker, who cycles each day to work and in his spare time with his young family walks the hills and valleys of Ogmore and South Wales. Huw is also working with local groups to extend cycle-routes and to expand community routes for work and leisure.
Huw said, “Cycling and working are good for the environment, but also very good for our physical and mental health. It is a great to see the huge investment by Sustrans Cymru, Bridgend County Borough Council and Welsh Government in our walking and cycling network locally. So many more children are cycling now thanks to the ‘Safe Routes to School’ scheme and everyday more adults are cycling to work. But there is always more to do, and I’m pleased to be working with local communities on extending the network so that more and more people can reap the benefits of walking and cycling.”
Sustrans Cymru promotes outdoor activity, campaigns for safer streets, and creates travel guides so that more people in Wales can enjoy an active lifestyle. Their work includes organising outdoor activities for those from deprived areas and the elderly, and encouraging active commuting to school and work.
