Huw helps students clean up the Ewenny River

Huw Irranca Davies - Pencoed Comprehensive ECO Group

The Pencoed Comprehensive School was selected as a pilot for the Schools for Resilience project, a European-wide initiative to involve students in solving local problems related to food, waste, mobility, or energy.

In the first stage of the project, students split into teams and explored Pencoed, mapping potential environmental issues with GPS coordinates. After debating which problem to tackle in order to best improve the sustainability and resilience of their community, the students decided on cleaning up a polluted section of the Ewenny River.

In addition to helping clear out the river with the students, Huw also picked up a litter picker to clear the riverbanks. To cap off the project, the students will make posters explaining their contribution to the community and the environment.

Huw said, “It was fantastic to see the students taking action against the problems they see as most harmful to their community. The Comprehensive’s focus on giving pupils real-world experience through community connections – as exemplified by the Ewenny River clean-up – is a testament to the success of the school and its students.”
