Huw Attends Launch of New Debt Advice Centre in Tondu.

Ogmore MP, Huw Irranca-Davies, has attended the launch of a new centre in Tondu which aims to help people in debt. The Christians Against Poverty Centre, based at Tondu Methodist Church on Maesteg Road, offers a free service to people in struggling financial circumstances.

The advice centre is also supported by Llansantffraid Church, the Community Church in Aberkenfig, Nazareth Baptist Church in Bryncethin, Church of God and Smyrna Baptist Church. With this support Christians Against Poverty will be able to provide comprehensive support to members of the community who need it.

The new centre is part of an international network of debt advice centres which make up the CAP debt counselling charity. This organisation has been in existence since 1996 and now has around 300 debt centres across the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Mr. Irranca-Davies attended the launch of the centre in Tondu with local AM Janice Gregory, Bridgend Borough Mayor Gary Thomas, Bridgend County Mayor Mel Nott and Bridgend cabinet member Mike Gregory.

Mr Irranca-Davies said ‘While it is true that debt problems can occur at any time the tough economic circumstances are forcing more and more families into desperate situations. The new CAP debt centre – alongside existing debt advice services in the Bridgend area – will be a lifeline for the people in our community who have fallen on hard times.’

‘The combined work of the Churches in supporting and establishing the centre shows that once again it is our community, working together and supporting each other that is the best way to get through difficult times.’
