Huw attends Catch the Bus week event in Ogmore

Huw Irranca-Davies met with local bus drivers, First Bus staff and local access groups to discuss the barriers that visually impaired passengers face when travelling on the bus.

The ‘Swap with Me’ event in Ogmore was organised by Bus Users Cymru, in partnership with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and Guide Dogs Cymru. The event took place as part of Catch the Bus week, a national celebration of the benefits of taking the bus.

At the event, Huw was given the opportunity to wear SIM specs and then try to board a bus, get a ticket, find a seat and alight in the correct place in order to understand the issues faced by visually impaired passengers.

Speaking after the event Huw said, “Catch the Bus week is a wonderful celebration of all the benefits of taking the bus. The bus network in Wales allows people of all ages to get out of the house, get involved in their local communities, and visit friends and relatives.”

“It was great to be able to speak with bus drivers and representatives from Bus Users Cymru, the RNIB and Guide Dogs Cymru about the barriers that exist for bus passengers with visual impairments, and how we can respond to them.”
