Give Welsh Meat Industry Fairer Deal – Huw Supports £1m Meat ‘Claw Back’ Call from

Huw recently met with meat industry leaders at an AM’s briefing event in the Senedd holding crucial discussions to ensure the safe-guarding of the welsh meat industry.
He told industry leaders that the potential impact of the Brexit on areas of the Welsh red meat industry, like EU exports and PGI status, meant that repatriating more than £1 million a year of marketing and development cash now unfairly residing in England was more important than ever.
Meat industry leaders have been told that £1million of marketing and development cash needs to be clawed back from England to ensure fair funding for the meat industry.
Huw stated: “The slaughter industry’s restructuring over decades to the disadvantage of that Welsh red meat levy means that the industry has a lot less funds available for essential marketing and promotion work. There have been signals from the UK Government that they are willing to engage with us and other devolved administrations and bring forward proposals that would have a fairer settlement. It sounds like there is a will up there to do it – but we have to bolt that down and push harder with all of our political parties in saying we need a fairer deal. As an Assembly and for cross-party colleagues, we need to bang the drum on this.
Huw also reiterated the concerns of (Hybu Cig Cymru) HCC Chairman Dai Davies who, in also addressing the meeting, said that more than 90 per cent of the Welsh red meat export trade relied on the EU, stressing the need for a Brexit with “free and unfettered trade access”.
