Garw Valley Hosts Winter OlympAGE
Bridgend County Borough Council’s successful series of OlympAGE events held throughout the county borough provide socially active sporting activities for older residents and people with learning and physical disabilities. A range of accessible activities such as boccia, bounce ball, target throw, badminton and shuffleboard to name a few are offered.
The latest Winter OlympAGE, held in the Garw Valley Life Centre was attended by over 70 people including volunteers from the community. Named as overall winners on the day were the team at Ty Pen Y Bont Day Services.
Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies who also attended the event and enjoyed many of the activities stated: “Fun events like the OlympAGE games encourage older and disabled people to stay active and I’m pleased to see Bridgend County Borough Council are holding more regular sessions. As well as benefitting physical health, they help improve the mental well-being of those involved by supporting them to be more socially active. A wonderful idea and a great day. Well done to all the many organisations who have made these events so successful.”
Following the OlympAGE theme, and via joint partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council and Halo, regular sociable sporting sessions are now offered in various centres across the County Borough. Being age-friendly and inclusive, they are a great way of bringing people together focussing on fun and friendship rather than competition. Everyone is welcome and anyone can take part whilst enjoying a cuppa and a chat.
