“Come and Join Us”, say Lewistown Credit Union and Huw
One of the oldest branches of the highly successful Bridgend Lifesavers Credit Union is going strong after more than a decade, and is seeking new members and volunteers throughout the whole of the Ogmore valley.
Huw enjoyed chatting to the volunteers of the Credit Union, including their oldest volunteer Gwladys Bernard who has helped out for over fifteen years and is now in her eighties. Huw said “Credit Unions like this one in Lewistown encourage a responsible approach to saving and borrowing and financial management. They are the sane and safe alternative to pay-day money-lenders and loan sharks, who so often land borrowers in debt and despair.”
The Bridgend Life-Savers Credit Union now has over 3,500 members across the area, including many employers of the ABMU health board and other large local employers. They are one of the largest and most successful credit unions in Wales, operating on a “not-for-profit” basis so that proceeds go into offering low-cost financial services to their members.
Huw added “Credit Unions are a wonderful example of people and communities coming together to help and support each other, and helping to provide long-term financial security. It is people-power at its very best!”
If you are interested in joining as a member of the Bridgend Lifesavers credit union at Lewistown, pop along any Tuesday to the Tenants and Residents Association (TRA) between 12pm and 1pm any Tuesday.
