CHILDREN IN WALES OFF TO A FLYING START
GARTH FLYING START
Flying Start – making a real difference to children’s lives in Ogmore with Bridgend County Borough Council leading the way in early years support.
Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies visited Flying Start Centres in Garth and Lewistown to officially open the facilities along with Bridgend County Borough Council Leader Huw David, Deputy Leader Hywel Williams, Cabinet Members Phil White, Richard Young, Dhanisha Patel and the Mayor Councillor Pam Davies.
Following the visits the Assembly Member stated: “As a big supporter of Flying Start it was a pleasure to ‘cut the ribbon’ on the successful flagship Welsh Labour Government scheme and join in the celebrations. The dedication and hard work of the staff and family support workers is clearly making a huge difference to children’s lives whilst continuing to help and support families in Ogmore.
As we celebrate 20 years of Devolution in Wales, Flying Start is a clear example of success in Welsh Labour Government legislation. Whilst over the border, the English equivalent Sure Start has been cut ‘back to the bone’ by the Tory led UK Government, our Government recognises that children’s early years are vitally important to their future development. It is good to see a continued investment in our children’s future and a steady increase of Flying Start centres.
Bridgend Council Leader Councillor Huw David added: “Flying Start is all about enabling and equipping families so they can provide better opportunities for their children, and more than 1,500 local youngsters are currently benefitting from the scheme in Bridgend County Borough.
The programme has been so successful that Welsh Government increased its original target of supporting 18,000 children across Wales to 36,000. That says a great deal about the value of the work that is being undertaken at local Flying Start facilities, and I would like to thank the staff and partner organisations who are working alongside us to make it possible.”
