Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies saw first-hand today the great work being done by the Flying Start scheme in Sarn. Meeting with parents, babies and toddlers to hear about the support they receive and the difference the scheme is making.
Flying Start offers eligible parents free, quality childcare for children under the age of four as well as parenting support, an enhanced health visitor service and help with their children’s early language development. The number of young children benefitting from the scheme has more than doubled over the last five years, with over 38,000 children taking part last year.
The flagship Welsh Labour Government scheme recognises that children’s early years are vitally important to children’s future development.
Following the visit Huw said “All the evidence shows that investment in early years pays off in the future development of the child – in primary and secondary school, and in later life. I’m proud to support a Welsh Labour Government which doesn’t just believe in our young people, but invests in them too”.
Council Leader Huw David and Cabinet Member Dhanisha Patel also spoke with parents and staff. Councillor David said: “It was a delight to see the smiling faces of children and parents who were enjoying the Flying Start sessions, learning new skills and growing in confidence. It is a tribute to the work of the Flying Start team, but also all the family support workers, midwives and others who work with parents to give their children the best start in life.”
