Bridgend Ford Engine Plant Closure

Following the announcement Welsh Government Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates, along with Ogmore representatives Huw Irranca-Davies AM and Chris Elmore MP, on site at the Bridgend plant, after having spent some time chatting to members of the workforce, listening to their concerns and offering their support.

The National Assembly for Wales were able to express it’s views on the proposals by Ford to close the engine plant at Bridgend, thanks to an Emergency Question laid by Carwyn Jones, AM for Bridgend.

Following on from the points made by Carwyn in opening this debate (including about pensions which I do not repeat here), I laid out my concerns for the Ford workers and their families, the supply-chain, and the communities in Bridgend and across the region.

I asked the Welsh Government to challenge Ford on the decision, but also for Welsh and UK government to put investment in to the immediate and wider Bridgend area at scale and pace to maintain jobs and confidence in the economy, and to work with the local authroity and others to identify the priorities for investment.

We will continue to liaise with unions and workforce going forward, and to engage fully with the taskforce established by Economy Minister Ken Skates.
