Breaking the Silence with a Cuppa and a Chat

‘Contact The Elderly’ is a national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people through face to face contact. They recently launched their latest group which covers the areas of Llanharan, Brynna, Pencoed, Llanharry, Ynysmaerdy, Brynna and Bryncae.

Volunteer-led Sunday tea parties are organised in a volunteer host’s home and guests must be aged over 70 and living alone. Transport is also provided for the guests via volunteer drivers who transport them to and from the venue for afternoon tea.

Ogmore Assembly Member and Welsh Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies popped in to meet with the group to enjoy a cuppa and good conversation along with RCT Council Cabinet Member Councillor Geraint Hopkins and local Councillor Roger Turner. They met at the Llanharan Welfare Hall as a special afternoon tea, due to it being the official launch of the group.

Following the visit the Huw stated:  “It was a pleasure to meet up with Sarah and guests for the launch of their new group in Llanharan. The members’, aged between 70-87years, all suffer from loneliness and these afternoon teas provide a great opportunity to enjoy a nice meal whilst forming new friendships. We can all play our part to combat loneliness and social isolation by working together.  Well done to all involved and a big shout out to the volunteers who give their time freely – they are a critical part of the future success of these much needed groups.”
